Christmas is the perfect time to create magical memories with your kids. From festive crafts to cozy family traditions, there are countless ways to celebrate the season together. Here are some fun and creative Christmas activities your kids will love and cherish for years.

1. Decorate a Gingerbread House

Bring out the icing, candies, and sprinkles to decorate a gingerbread house together. Whether you start with a pre-made kit or bake the pieces from scratch, this activity is a great way to let your kids’ creativity shine. I used to like leaking the plate with the raw dough and having one finger stuck into the mixer. That was me.

2. Create Homemade Christmas Ornaments

Get crafty with your kids by making personalized Christmas ornaments. Use materials like salt dough, popsicle sticks, or felt to create unique decorations. This is a fun bonding activity and a lovely way to add a personal touch to your Christmas tree. Way to go!

3. Write Letters to Santa

Set up a cozy writing station with festive paper, markers, and stickers so your kids can write letters to Santa. Encourage them to share their wishes and maybe even include a thank-you note. You can “send” the letters by mailing them or placing them in a special box. In Canada, we need to find a way to send the letter differently because of the Canada Post strike. Writing to Santa is a magical moment for me!

4. Host a Christmas Movie Marathon

Pick your family’s favourite holiday movies, prepare popcorn, and snuggle under cozy blankets for a Christmas movie marathon. Classics like Home Alone, The Polar Express, and Elf are perfect choices to get everyone in the holiday spirit. Any movies that you like.

5. Bake and Decorate Christmas Cookies

Spend an afternoon baking and decorating cookies together. Let your kids cut out fun shapes like stars, trees, and snowflakes, then decorate them with colourful icing and sprinkles. These homemade treats can double as gifts for friends and family. Yummy!

6. Have a Christmas Karaoke Night

Turn your living room into a concert stage and sing along to your favourite Christmas songs. From “Jingle Bells” to “All I Want for Christmas Is You,” this activity will bring lots of laughs and holiday cheer. A great way to have fun and laugh with family and friends!

7. Read Christmas Stories Together

Set aside time each evening to read a Christmas story with your kids. Choose from classics like The Night Before Christmas or How the Grinch Stole Christmas. You could even create a countdown by reading a different holiday-themed book each night leading up to Christmas. This is one of my favourite activities to do with children. Awakening their imagination and seeing their faces glowing, even myself, brings back the magic of Christmas.

8. Create a DIY Advent Calendar

Design a personalized advent calendar with small surprises or activities for each day. You can include mini chocolates, fun crafts, or family activities. Your kids will love the excitement of counting down to Christmas in such a hands-on way.

9. Volunteer or Donate to Together

Teach your kids the joy of giving by participating in a charity activity as a family. Whether donating toys to a local drive, baking cookies for neighbours, or volunteering at a food bank, this activity helps instill the true spirit of Christmas. Also, the joy of your neighbour’s faces.

10. Host a “Santa’s Workshop” Craft Day

Transform your home into Santa’s workshop for a day filled with crafting. Provide supplies for making holiday cards, gift tags, and small presents. Your kids will enjoy creating handmade items for loved ones.
It is fun to work together.

11. Decorate the Christmas Tree Together

Turn tree decorating into a family event. Play Christmas music, and let your kids hang ornaments (even if they cluster them all in one spot!). It’s a fantastic way to start the holiday season and laugh together.

In conclusion

The holidays are a magical time to bond with your kids and create memories that last a lifetime. Whether crafting, baking, or simply enjoying quiet moments together, the key is embracing the season’s joy and togetherness. I love Christmas and the preparation that makes Christmas memorable.

Which of these activities will you try first? Let the holiday fun begin!

Personally, I love reading stories and bringing the magic of Christmas to children and even to myself.
Also, decorate the house together.
